Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy that was originally developed by Marsha Linehan, PhD, ABPP. Watch our video explaining DBT. Dialectical Therapy is used to treat mood disorders and to change patterns of behavior that are not effective, such as self-harm, suicidal ideation, and maladaptive behaviors.

DBT can help clients increase their emotional and cognitive regulation by learning the triggers that lead to reactive states as well as help them assess which coping skills to apply in order to be effective and to avoid undesired reactions. In other words, learn to do what works!

The assumption with DBT is that clients are doing their best; they lack the skills needed to be effective and/or are influenced by positive or negative reinforcements that get in the way of optimal living.

At OptimalLife Wellness Center, our DBT-trained therapists focus on building the tools and skills needed to manage emotions and behaviors more effectively and constructively. These skills include mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.
