Has your child’s mood, behavior, or personality changed in ways that worry you — and you’re not sure what is driving it?

Is your child complaining of stomachaches, headaches, or sleep problems with no clear medical cause?

Do you feel like you’ve lost touch with your child or teenager, and the approaches that used to work just don’t anymore?

Are your child’s struggles at home, school, or with friends affecting the whole family?

Is your teenager showing signs of depression, anxiety, anger, or withdrawal that feel bigger than typical growing pains?

Do you wish your child had a safe, supportive space to talk to someone outside the family — someone specially trained to help kids?

Understanding Child & Adolescent Mental Health

When Growing Up Feels Too Hard

As children and adolescents grow, they develop the emotional and social skills that help them lead healthy, happy lives. But some also develop mental health challenges that affect their behavior, emotions, and well-being — stemming from a specific event like divorce, abuse, or a family move, or emerging gradually over time with no single clear cause.

As a parent, you might feel like you don’t know your child anymore. Maybe they seem depressed, angry, or withdrawn. Perhaps they’re complaining of stomachaches or headaches with nothing medically wrong, refusing to go to school, or acting out in ways that are straining friendships and family life. At OptimalLife Wellness, we provide therapy for children and adolescents aged 5 and older — and Parent Training & Coaching for parents who want support too.

The Tween & Teenage Years

When Your Child Becomes a Stranger

The tween and teen years are an emotionally charged time for many families. Parents often feel at a loss trying to reach a child who seems like a stranger — the approaches that once worked simply don’t anymore.

Sometimes this is normal: hormonal shifts and peer pressure are a natural, if difficult, part of adolescent development. But surly moods and behavior changes can also signal something deeper. Depression in kids often looks different than in adults — more restless and irritable than sad — and kids rarely have the words to tell you what’s wrong. Instead, they act out. That behavior is often their way of asking for help.

How We Help: Our Approach

At OptimalLife Wellness, our child therapists have been specially trained to work with children, adolescents, and their families on a wide range of issues. We meet each child where they are — using age-appropriate, engaging approaches that help kids open up and begin to heal.

We provide therapy for issues including:

ADHD

Helping children and teens build focus, manage impulsivity, and develop strategies for success at home and in school.

Anxiety

Supporting kids in understanding their anxiety, learning coping tools, and gradually building confidence in challenging situations.

Depression

Recognizing how depression shows up differently in kids — often as irritability or restlessness — and providing compassionate, effective care.

Divorce & Family Transitions

Helping children process and adjust to major family changes in healthy, age-appropriate ways.

Trauma & Abuse

The Benefits of Child & Adolescent Therapy

Child and adolescent therapy offers meaningful, lasting benefits — not just for your child, but for your whole family:

A Safe Space to Open Up

Children and teens often find it easier to talk to a neutral, trusted adult outside the family. Therapy provides a confidential, non-judgmental space where kids can express what they’re truly feeling — without fear of worrying or upsetting their parents. This openness is often the first step toward real change.

Emotional Tools That Last a Lifetime

Therapy helps children and teenagers develop practical emotional regulation skills — tools for managing anxiety, anger, sadness, and overwhelm — that they will carry with them long after treatment ends. These skills form a foundation for healthy emotional functioning into adulthood.

Improved Behavior at Home and School

As children gain insight into their emotions and learn better ways to cope, the behaviors that concerned you — the outbursts, the withdrawal, the refusal to go to school — typically begin to improve. Families often describe feeling like they finally have their child back.

Stronger Family Relationships

Therapy doesn’t just help the child — it helps the whole family. As communication improves and underlying issues are addressed, parents and children often find new ways to connect and understand one another. Our Parent Coaching services can further support this process.

Better Performance and Engagement at School

Mental health challenges frequently show up in the classroom — through difficulty concentrating, declining grades, school avoidance, or social struggles. As children begin to feel better emotionally, their engagement and performance at school often improve alongside their mood.

Healing from Trauma

For children who have experienced abuse, trauma, or significant loss, therapy provides a safe and structured path to healing. Our therapists use evidence-based, trauma-informed approaches to help young clients process difficult experiences and move forward with resilience.

We understand that a struggling child affects the entire family. In addition to individual child and adolescent therapy, we offer family therapy and parent coaching to ensure that every member of your family has the support they need to thrive together.

Frequently Asked Questions About Child & Adolescent Therapy

Our child therapists provide therapy for children and adolescents aged 5 and older. We work with younger children, school-age kids, tweens, and teenagers, adapting our approaches to meet each child at their developmental stage. We also offer Parent Coaching for parents of children of all ages.

Some signs that your child may benefit from therapy include: persistent changes in mood or behavior, withdrawal from friends or family, declining school performance, frequent physical complaints (stomachaches, headaches) with no medical cause, difficulty sleeping, expressions of hopelessness or worthlessness, or behaviors that seem out of proportion to the situation.

If you are unsure, we encourage you to reach out. Our intake coordinator can help you think through whether therapy is the right next step for your child.

No. Our therapists are skilled at working with children who are reluctant to talk, using age-appropriate methods — including play-based approaches, art, and other creative tools — to help kids express what they’re feeling without relying on words alone. We always follow the child’s lead and build trust at their pace.

Yes — parent involvement is an important part of the process. While your child’s individual sessions are confidential (with age-appropriate exceptions for safety), we regularly collaborate with parents to share general progress, offer guidance, and align on strategies you can use at home. For younger children especially, parent involvement is central to the work.

We also offer dedicated Parent Training & Coaching sessions for parents who want more direct guidance and support.

This is more common than you might think. Teenagers often resist the idea of therapy, especially at first. Our therapists are experienced at building rapport with reluctant teens — meeting them with curiosity, respect, and a genuine interest in their world rather than an agenda. Many teens who arrive skeptical become engaged participants once they feel genuinely heard.

If your teen is strongly resistant, a parent coaching session can also be a good starting point — giving you tools to better support and connect with your child while the idea of therapy becomes more familiar.

Our therapists work with children and adolescents on a wide range of concerns, including ADHD, anxiety, depression, anger and behavior challenges, grief and loss, divorce and family transitions, trauma and abuse (including sexual assault), peer and social difficulties, school-related stress, and LGBTQIA+ identity. If you have a specific concern, our intake coordinator can help match your child with the right therapist.

Yes. We offer secure, confidential online therapy sessions for children and adolescents throughout Washington State. Many kids — especially teenagers — feel comfortable with video sessions, and online therapy can be a great fit for busy families or those who prefer the convenience of home-based care.
